Valsala's first day at new school: A collaborative learning workshop

By the end of this workshop, we will learn about data in the school context. What are personal data? What kind of data are collected at schools? How can we protect our data and much more.

Duration: 40 Minutes

New Digital Platform at Valsala's School

The sun had already set by the time Chandran pulled up to his child's school for the parent-teacher conference.

He rushed towards the auditorium, cursing the unexpected traffic that delayed him. As he approached the entrance, he could hear muffled discussions emanating from inside. Taking a deep breath, he slowly opened the door, hoping to slip in unnoticed. The auditorium was bustling with activity. Parents and teachers were huddled in various groups, engaged in animated discussions. Chandran scanned the room for a familiar face and, to his relief, spotted Valsala's dad, Ramesh. He quickly made his way over, "Ramesh! I'm so sorry for being late. The traffic was a nightmare."

Ramesh laughed, "You've missed only the introduction, Chandran. We're just getting into the interesting part."

Curious, Chandran inquired, "What's happening?" Ramesh, pointing to the digital projector, said, "The school administration is introducing a new digital platform. It's meant to bridge the communication gap between parents and teachers. They want our inputs on the kind of information we'd like to access on this platform."

Chandran's eyes lit up, "That sounds progressive! Digitization is truly changing the way we live, isn't it?"
Ramesh chuckled, "Indeed. And why should our school be left behind in this digital revolution?" Chandran nodded in agreement. "So, what kind of information are we talking about?"

Part 2

The auditorium was filled with the hum of satisfied conversation as parents finished submitting their responses. The PTA president was wrapping up his speech when Salim, seated prominently in the front row, turned with a look of concern."Have you heard about Sara's daughter, Sharon?"

Salim whispered, ensuring his voice didn't carry too far. Chandran leaned in, intrigued, "What happened?" Salim's voice trembled slightly, "Sharon's phone number was leaked from Zwigato. What if our children's data gets compromised in a similar way here?"

Chandran tried to reassure him, "We're not dealing with a company, Salim. We're entrusting the data to our teachers."

"But even Zwigato didn't intend for the leak. Shouldn't we ensure our school is taking precautions?"

Salim pressed. The gravity of Salim's concern dawned on Chandran. Neither wanted to interrupt the president, but the issue was too pressing to ignore."Why not discuss it with Hameed? He's approachable," Chandran suggested, pointing to their children's math teacher who was seated nearby.

Catching Hameed's attention, Salim relayed Sharon's story. Hameed, sensing the significance, tactfully raised the concern to the president.

Salim, gathering courage from the shared sentiment, stood up. "Given what's happened at Zwigato and understanding the potential risks, I believe we should reconsider the list we've just created. Our children's safety is paramount."

There was a pause as everyone let Salim's words sink in. A few parents started whispering among themselves, while others looked pensive.Chandran, reflecting on their earlier conversation, voiced his support. "Salim's right. We should be more cautious. Perhaps we can use the list we've made as a starting point but revise it with data security in mind."
The PTA president, sensing the gravity of the situation, intervened. "Thank you, Salim, Chandran, and Hameed, for bringing this to our attention. It's clear that we need to be more discerning about the information we wish to include in our new digital platform. Let's retrieve the lists and work on them again, ensuring we prioritize our children's safety and privacy."

A collective nod spread across the room. The parents felt empowered, knowing that their concerns were heard and that they were actively participating in shaping a secure digital environment for their children. The meeting may have taken an unexpected turn, but it was a necessary detour on the path to ensuring the well-being of their kids in the digital age.Imagine our school as a digital building, a 'Digital Schoolhouse.' We're the architects of this structure."
